Retail's AI investment is shifting from pilot projects to C-suite strategy and org structure.
Retail's AI moment has moved past the proof-of-concept stage. Target hired its first chief AI officer from Lowe's; Victoria's Secret restructured tech leadership entirely. Walmart is running digital twins across its supply chain. Even Bed Bath & Beyond signaled AI-driven headcount cuts. Watch: Whether newly created retail AI officer roles accrue real budget authority or remain symbolic—the distinction will determine if these appointments change outcomes.
