OpenAI, Anthropic issue dire cyber threat warning

OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, AWS, and over 100 other companies issued an open letter warning that organizations have months, not years, to prepare for AI-enabled cyberattacks. Critical infrastructure including hospitals, water treatment plants, and power grids face growing risk as AI tools dramatically reduce the time and cost required for sophisticated attacks. The letter calls for collective action across four groups: organizations must fix highest-risk vulnerabilities, tech companies must build accessible AI-powered defenses, governments must coordinate threat intelligence sharing, and frontier AI firms must provide defenders access to their most capable models during major incidents. The warning follows a real-world attack on U.S. water systems using an AI-generated exploitation script. Notably, the letter carried no specific commitments, deadlines, or funding pledges from any signatory.
