Google is taking on Anthropic and OpenAI in the legal AI race

Google launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on August 25, a bundle of AI agents designed for contract review, regulatory tracking, and case file search. The product enters a crowded field where Anthropic, OpenAI, and Microsoft are all pursuing the legal sector, which is under client pressure to cut costs and reduce billable hours for work AI can perform. Google developed the suite with input from firms including Cleary Gottlieb and Freshfields, and committed that client data will not be used to train its foundation models. Rather than displacing incumbents, Google took a partnership-heavy approach, integrating with Everlaw, Relativity, iManage, DocuSign, Thomson Reuters, Harvey, and Legora, which helped limit the stock damage seen when Anthropic's February legal announcement erased tens of billions in market value from legal tech companies.
