How Much of the Internet Is Written With AI?

Pew Research Center analyzed nearly 500,000 English-language webpages from 2021 to 2026 and found that roughly 10% of .com domain pages now show signs of AI authorship, up from around 1% before ChatGPT's launch in late 2022. AI-generated content is far less prevalent on .org domains at 4.6% and minimal on .edu and .gov domains at approximately 1% each. Linguistic markers associated with AI writing have surged across the web since 2023: em dash usage has roughly doubled, Oxford comma frequency is up 63%, AI-favored vocabulary has more than doubled, and negative parallelism constructions have nearly tripled. The findings track closely with adoption data showing 24% of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots daily. The trend indicates commercial web content is being reshaped fastest by AI generation, while institutional and academic domains remain largely human-authored.
