A call for collective action on cyber defense

OpenAI and over 150 organizations have signed a collective cyber defense pledge, warning that AI-enabled cyberattacks will become significantly more widespread and sophisticated within months. The initiative targets critical infrastructure sectors including hospitals, water treatment plants, and internet infrastructure, which remain exposed due to legacy technical debt, misconfigurations, and under-resourced security teams. Signatories commit to four action tracks: organizations raising security standards immediately, cybersecurity firms leading AI-powered defense deployment, governments funding and coordinating defenses at all levels, and frontier AI companies providing tools, funding, and hands-on support to under-resourced defenders. The core argument is that AI currently provides a narrow window in which defenders can gain an advantage before attackers fully exploit the same capabilities. The coalition frames this as requiring collective action across industry, government, and AI developers rather than isolated responses from any single entity.
