The Frontier · A KokoAI point of view

    Research edition 3.1.0 · Reviewed Sep 16, 2026

    Monthly check-in

CFO Future Guide check-in: the first seven weeks. September 14, 2026 to October 31, 2026: 3 strengthened, 3 held.

    This month

Seven weeks after the CFO 2030 POV was published, three of its six hypotheses are strengthened and three are held; none is weakened. The clearest movement is on trust and capital. Finance now formally approves AI decisions in most large companies, but it still finds out what AI cost after the fact: in Deloitte's 3Q26 survey, 53% of CFOs review AI costs retrospectively and 74% need days to weeks to stop excess usage. That is the gap the trusted-finance hypothesis predicted, between authority to delegate and the controls that make delegation safe. On capital, the evidence is that most companies cannot yet show returns use case by use case, which strengthens the case for funding AI in stages rather than in annual blocks. The workforce picture is mixed, and the regulatory clock has slowed even as internal demand for governance rises.

Tracking CFO 2030: The enterprise value orchestrator, published 2026-09-14. The point of view itself is not edited; each month rates its hypotheses against new evidence. Ratings approved by Koko (owner) on 2026-11-03. 22 sources: 10 primary, 10 secondary, 2 vendor or sponsored.

    The scorecard

    1. Trust becomes the capacity to delegate

      Strengthened

Finance has the authority but not yet the controls. Nearly 80% of finance teams have a formal role in AI decisions, yet most review AI costs after the bill arrives and cannot stop spending quickly. Separate reports that checking AI output has become a second workload support the hypothesis's own challenge: weak trust is expensive.

      Supports it

      Cuts against it

      • Inc. (2026-10-14, secondary coverage)

      Watch next month

      • The share of CFOs who can pause AI usage in hours rather than days (Deloitte 4Q26 CFO Signals, due January).
      • Whether any large company discloses an AI-related control deficiency in a 10-K Item 9A.
    2. Knowledge becomes productive capital

      Held

The sources point the hypothesis's way, but they are thin: shared-services role frameworks that add knowledge curation, and commentary blaming missing enterprise context for weak AI value. None is a measured study of finance outcomes, so the rating does not move.

      Supports it

      Cuts against it

      Nothing this window.

      Watch next month

      • A primary study that measures AI outcomes against data-product or knowledge-layer maturity.
      • Finance job postings for knowledge or data-product owners.
    3. The interface moves; accountability stays

      Strengthened

The interface is moving inside the systems of record. Workday moved from copilots to autopilots that start finance tasks without being prompted, SAP reported a 28% rise in its cloud backlog, and the share of earnings calls mentioning AI agents rose from 28.4% to 33.6%. Commentary on onboarding payment agents shows that identity, permissions and liability, rather than processing cost, are now the gating issues. That is the accountability half of the hypothesis.

      Supports it

      Cuts against it

      Nothing this window.

      Watch next month

      • Earnings-call agent mention share in November (Koko corpus measure).
      • The first ERP vendor to publish an approval-and-liability model for agent-initiated postings.
    4. Judgment must scale with automation

      Held

The signals point in different directions. In a Datarails vendor survey, 60% of finance leaders say AI let them redeploy staff and only 3% are reducing headcount, while 52% of UK CFOs in Deloitte's survey expect AI to shrink their own teams within a year. PwC's June barometer, which predates this window, found jobs that AI makes more skilled growing twice as fast as jobs it makes easier to do. That fits judgment scaling with automation, but intentions are not yet reductions.

      Supports it

      Cuts against it

      Watch next month

      • Whether UK CFO headcount expectations show up in reported finance-function headcount.
      • Redeployment versus reduction in the next CFO surveys from Deloitte, Datarails and Gartner.
    5. Capital must move as evidence changes

      Strengthened

Returns are unclear use case by use case, and spending is overrunning. In a Gartner survey of finance leaders, 57% of the AI use cases evaluated had unclear returns; 83% of CFOs report AI overruns; and Gartner's keynote argues that AI risk is rising faster than AI value. Funding in stages, with authority to stop and redirect, is the remedy the hypothesis proposes.

      Supports it

      Cuts against it

      Nothing this window.

      Watch next month

      • Whether 2027 budgets fund AI in tranches or as annual programs (Q4 earnings calls).
      • Vendor ROI telemetry becoming a contract term rather than a dashboard.
    6. Governance becomes an operating capability

      Held

Demand inside companies is rising while the external clock is slowing. Webcasts on governance frameworks and commentary on AI returns that executives claim but never certify show governance becoming an operating need. But the EU AI Act's high-risk obligations were provisionally deferred to late 2027 and 2028, and the PCAOB is still consulting on AI. The driver is shifting from regulation to cost and control, which the hypothesis allows but did not lead with.

      Supports it

      Cuts against it

      Nothing this window.

      Watch next month

      • Formal adoption of the EU AI Act omnibus in the Official Journal.
      • Any PCAOB guidance or staff statement on AI used by preparers versus auditors.

    • Finance owns AI approval, not yet AI control

Most finance teams now approve AI spend and use cases, but few can see or stop it in real time. Cost governance is splitting off as its own discipline.

    • Agents arrive inside the systems of record

Workday and Microsoft shipped agentic finance capability in October, SAP's cloud backlog rose 28%, and agent mentions on earnings calls rose.

    • Redeploy, not reduce, for now

Survey respondents mostly say AI moves people to higher-value work, while forward-looking UK expectations point to cuts. Watch reported headcount, not intentions.
